One of the two principal towns in the borough, Leigh is synonymous with rugby league but there is much more besides. The new Leigh Sports Village site provides international-class sporting facilities on the edge of town with the site also boasting a leisure centre and pool, retail and hotel facilities and the town's college.

Just across the road from the site is Pennington Flash Country Park, an important birdwatching site, with other greenspace nearby at Pennington Hall Park and Lilford Park. The centrepiece of the town is the library and Turnpike Arts Gallery, with the Spinning Gate Centre the principal retail location.

Leigh Sports Village is the biggest investment in public sports, recreational and educational facilities in Wigan borough for many years and has transformed Leigh into one of the finest hubs of activity in the North West.

Leigh Sports Village provides state of the art facilities for sport, physical activity, education, health and leisure that serves the whole community. Since the official opening of the Village by Her Majesty The Queen, the Village has gone from strength to strength in providing a range of activities for local people of all ages and backgrounds to hosting international sporting events.
