Gurias victorious in PNG cup final
Agmark Rabaul Guria defeated Structural Bridging System Mendi Muruks 14-10 to claim Papua New Guinea’s Digicel Cup last weekend.
Enthusiastic supporters began arriving at the Port Moresby stadium in the early hours of the morning – and those lucky enough to get in were not disappointed.
They saw the Gurias twice come from behind and eventually hold off the Muruks’ desperate late assault to clinch their first premiership title.
Winger Chris Jerry and veteran prop Rodney Pora were outstanding for the Gurias, the former grabbing a try in each half while Pora led a formidable pack effort.
Stand-off Kewa Kili and hooker Charlie Wabo gave their all for the Muruks, whose try scorers were star full-back Mathew Puke and utility back Malachi Owen.
The Muruks laid siege to the Gurias line in the closing stages, but the Gurias greater composure and sheer determination proved decisive.
