RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP | WORKINGTON

workington

Workington

An ancient market town on the west coast of Cumbria, Workington was historically a producer of coal, steel and iron ore. Today, its shopping, public art and 14th Century Hall draw visitors from far and wide. Workington Town RLFC was formed in December 1944 and, with a mix of highs and lows ever since, the team attracts legions of fans to its Derwent Park home.

Uppies and Downies

workington

Workington is home to a tradition known as ‘Uppies and Downies’, a mix of rugby and football that has its roots in Medieval times. A 21 inch ball, weighing about 1.1kg, is battled over every Easter as two teams attempt to reach their goal – the ‘Uppies’ to the gates of Curwen Hall and ‘Downies’ to a capstan at the harbour. It’s a unique spectacle, and one not to be missed!
